The Village
Taxiarchis is a large settlement built on Mount Cholomontas in Chalkidiki, in a densely forested area, with approximately 1,000 inhabitants. It is a municipal district of the Municipality of Polygyros. The village is named after the Archangel Michael, whose church stands prominently in its centre.
Among its highlights are the stone architecture, traditional guesthouses, the mushroom trail, and of course the stunning fir forests. The village has a strong identity rooted in forestry and nature.
The Cholomontas Fir Forest
At an altitude of approximately 600 metres, the Cholomontas fir forest is home primarily to Abies borisii-regis — the Greek fir. The humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and cool summers creates ideal growing conditions.
The majority of the settlement's income comes from fir tree cultivation, Christmas tree production, and forestry activities. Taxiarchis is the premier location for Christmas fir tree production in Greece.
